Entwined Illusion Quilt

“Illusion Quilt” or other names are Escher or  Entwined.

I made this Practice Table Runner first from my fabric stash to see if the pattern worked. Then I made my version of an Illusion Quilt, Escher, or Entwined Quilt.

I don't have a pattern so I am going to wing it and design this one myself I needed to make two trapezoid units (which consist of two blocks) one right-facing triangle and one left-facing triangle.

I am using a partial seam, which means you don't sew the whole seam to join one piece to another right away - you just sew part of it.

A  60-degree triangle is required for all of the cutting processes. The four fabric colours I have chosen to create the 3D illusion with White/spots fabric (light colour), Grey fabric (medium colour) Black fabric (dark colour), and a centre triangle of Red.

Cutting Instructions to make 304 trapezoid units:

Cut 34 strips of the dark fabric, sub-cut the strip using a 60-degree triangle place the bottom on the 4-1/2  line and the top on the 2-3/4 line, and then cut 304 isosceles trapezoid pieces, each strip will produce 9 units. See the photo below.

Cut 34 strips of the light fabric, sub-cut the strip using a 60-degree triangle place the bottom on the 4-1/2  line and the top on the 2-3/4 line, and then cut 304 isosceles trapezoid pieces, each strip will produce 9 units.

Cut 34 strips of the medium fabric, sub-cut the strip using a 60-degree triangle place the bottom on the 4-1/2  line and the top on the 2-3/4 line, and cut 304 isosceles trapezoid pieces, each strip will produce 9 units.

Cut 9 x 2-inch strips of red (feature) fabric to make the 2-inch triangles for the centre of the triangles. will need to cut 304 units. I marked all edges 1/4-inch triangles.

To sew one right-facing triangle and one left-facing trapezoid.

Sew on a 2-inch triangle to the light trapezoid left side of the trapezoid. Only sew half the seam making sure to backstitch the start and at the end of the partial seam.
Sew another 2-inch triangle to the opposite side of another trapezoid (right side) same as above.

then sew the grey, medium-coloured trapezoid to the unit to the red and white spotted unit. Sew the black trapezoid unit to the other red and white spotted unit.

Important Pressing instructions:

All seams must be pressed open, this will cut down on the bulk at the intersections and give a better point when joining units together.

Practice pieces

These are two rows pined together Sew together in rows. I made one row at a time.

The quilt top is 20 rows down and 19 rows across. At least two borders a small 2-inch red border and the second is a four-patch set on point using up any of the leftover quilt fabrics and I decided on a black and white strip binding.

Quilted on my longarm using Q-bot E2E Pattern.

Backing the quilt.

I plan to cut the backing fabric in half and piece three rows of boxes joined by a ribbon through the boxes in the middle of the backing.

Below is the Label and the Black and White striped binding.

Until next time

Happy Quilting
